An Introduction to Archive Research in Wales

Whether you are taking your first steps into historical research or looking to build on existing experience, this course provides an exciting introduction to the world of archives and original historical sources.

You will discover what archives are, how they preserve the past, and how to access and interpret the remarkable collections they hold. Alongside developing practical research skills, you will explore a wide range of historical sources and learn how to navigate important issues such as copyright, access restrictions, and the ethical use of archival material.

Throughout the course, you will design and develop your own research project based on your individual interests. Whether your passion lies in family history, local history, archaeology, architecture, or another area of the past, you will be supported by the tutor as you gain the confidence and skills to carry out original historical research.

The course combines online lectures and interactive seminars with a full-day field trip to two of Wales' premier archival institutions in Aberystwyth: the National Library of Wales and the National Monuments Record of Wales. Guided tours and talks from experienced archive professionals will provide a unique behind-the-scenes insight into these nationally significant collections and the work of those who care for them.

The online content is delivered through Blackboard, our online learning environment, and any live online sessions will be hosted via Teams. It can be studied as a stand-alone course, and it is also an optional module for the Certificate of Higher Education in Genealogical Studies at Aberystwyth University.
