This course will explore the versatility of ekphrasis as a poetic mode that draws inspiration from visual art. Each week we will read and discuss ekphrastic texts, reflecting on the relationship between the written text and the artwork to which it responds. We will use writing prompts to inspire new creative work. While the focus of this course will be on poetic ekphrasis, we will also include some discussion of ekphrastic narrative, and short prose forms such as prose poetry and flash fiction. Each week will include the reading of selected ekphrastic texts, analysis and discussion, followed by creative writing exercises.

This online course lets you study from home while connecting with a vibrant virtual community of fellow learners. The course is delivered through Blackboard, our online learning environment, and all live sessions will be hosted via Teams. It can be studied as a stand-alone course, and it is also an optional module for the Certificate of Higher Education in Creative Writing and for the Certificate of Higher Education in Art and Design at Aberystwyth University.
