Learning to play a musical instrument is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also feel daunting at first. New players are often faced with unfamiliar terminology, different playing techniques, and a wide range of learning methods, making it difficult to know where to begin. This course is designed to provide a supportive and structured introduction, helping you build confidence from your very first lesson.
This course offers a practical and welcoming introduction to both instruments. Whether you choose to learn the guitar or the ukulele, you will develop the essential skills needed to begin playing confidently while gaining an understanding of the instrument that best suits your musical interests and goals.
Throughout the course, participants will explore the different types of guitars and ukuleles, learn how to hold and tune their instrument, and develop fundamental playing techniques, including basic chords, rhythm patterns and simple melodies. The course will also introduce a variety of musical styles and discuss different approaches to learning, enabling participants to identify the methods and repertoire that best match their interests.
Alongside developing practical skills, learners will be encouraged to set achievable personal goals and will receive guidance on creating a tailored pathway for continued, independent learning after the course has ended. By the end of the module, participants will have the confidence to continue practising on their own and the knowledge to make informed choices about future lessons, resources and musical development.
Suitable for complete beginners as well as those returning to the instrument after a break, this course provides a friendly and encouraging environment in which to discover the enjoyment of making music.
This online course lets you study from home while connecting with a vibrant virtual community of fellow learners. The course is delivered through Blackboard, our online learning environment, and any live sessions will be hosted via Teams.
