Distance Learning - BSc. Information and Library Studies

This flexible, self-paced degree scheme allows you to complete your degree in 3-5 years. It is ideal if you have not been to university/higher education before but are looking for a professionally accredited qualification to help you progress in your career. An integral part of the course is the development of study skills, helping to build your confidence and abilities in academic research, planning and writing, including a final, short dissertation project.

DIS has been offering distance learning in this way for over 30 years, seeing thousands of students through to successful completion of a professionally accredited qualification. It has been designed to fit in with busy working/family lives and allows maximum choice and flexibility while also offering a clearly structured and supported route to qualification. You normally need to be working in the information sector (libraries, archives, records office, information management) but please get in touch with us if you have any questions about this.

Postgraduate

At postgraduate level, our degree schemes are offered as both full or part time (on-campus) and distance learning programmes. The following schemes are offered:

  • MA/PG Dip. Archives and Records Management
  • MSc/PG Dip. Digital Information and Media Management
  • MA/PG Dip. Information and Library Studies

Full or part time (campus-based)

Many students will take this route a few years after completing their first degree, or after taking a graduate trainee placement, internment of voluntary work; or some students may be looking for a career change after many years in the workplace. Aberystwyth University is a small, vibrant and friendly community that has close links with the town, and the nearby National Library of Wales and other important information and heritage organisations. You will need some library, archive or information sector experience (often achieved through voluntary work).

We realise that with the Covid-19 pandemic it can be challenging to gain workplace experience - so please get in touch with us if you have any questions about this.
