Film-Making Through English Course

This unique four-week course gives you an opportunity to improve your English skills and receive expert film-making tuition.

You will produce your own short film using the Department of Theatre, Film and Television's state-of-the-art studios and equipment, and will learn about scriptwriting, directing, shooting and editing along the way.  Language development is included throughout, and the course ends with a screening of your own film in the University's cinema!

In the evening and at weekends an exciting programme of trips, social events and activities offer you a chance to explore the area, make new friends and further develop your English skills in a friendly and informal atmosphere

‌Accommodation

Accommodation in University Halls of Residence consists of apartments with single self-study bedrooms and shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.  Accommodation is available from 15:00 on Saturday 23 July 2016 to 10:00 on Saturday 20 August 2016.

Facilities

You will live and have your classes on our attractive self-contained 400 acre campus.

You will have access to university sports centre, computer facilities, Students' Union facilitiesArts Centre, and University libraries. You can also make use of the wonderful resources at the National Library of Wales, just next door to the University.

The award-winning Arts Centre has cafes, bars, restaurants, theatre, cinema, and entertainment throughout the summer.

Who is the course for?

The course is for you if you are interested in film and want to improve your English skills.  It is suitable for students who are studying a film-related degree and for those with no previous experience.

What will I study?

Language and Culture Sessions

The course begins with a week of intensive language study to help you activate your English skills, extend your film-related vocabulary, and increase your confidence as a speaker of English.  Classes will be themed around topics related to film and television, and will prepare you for the practical and theoretical sessions of the following weeks.

Practical Film-Making Workshops

Experts from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies will guide you through the film-making process as you make your own short film.  You will learn to use the latest specialist equipment, and get hands-on experience of scriptwriting, directing, shooting and editing.

Film Theory Seminars

These seminars explore key themes in Film Studies.  You will gain insight into the 21st century movie industry, learn about genre, investigate stardom and celebrity, and discover how films are branded and promoted in different markets.  The seminars will help you to think about film in a new way and become a more critical and appreciative viewer.

Entry Requirements

Age You must be aged 17 or over at the start of the course
Language Level You must have an English level between CEFR B1/IELTS 4.5 -  CEFR B2/IELTS 6.0
Other The course is open for group bookings only.  Minimum group size of 7 participants
