Improve your English Language Skills can be studied as a stand-alone course and it is a core course for the Certificate of Higher Education in Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University.
This course provides an opportunity for learners to develop their skills in oracy, reading and writing and is accepted across Wales as an equivalency for GCSE English for Nursing and Initial Teacher Education. This course offers an opportunity to achieve a GCSE Level C proficiency in English Language as well as boosting your confidence and enhancing your skills.

This course, which is open to learners of all levels, provides an opportunity to develop and improve skills in English language oracy, reading and writing. Learners will be introduced to the study of English, and the relationship between the modes of speech and writing. You will analyse spoken and written English and will produce both spoken and written responses. This course offers an opportunity to achieve a GCSE Level C proficiency in English Language* as well as boosting your confidence and enhancing your skills. Programme.
Unit 1 - Autobiographical - first tasks which will contribute to the 1000 word portfolio The 1000 word portfolio makes up 50% of the marks for this course. The exercises in unit 1 focus on autobiography.
Unit 2 - History of English language and literature - portfolio tasks.
Unit 3 - Descriptive writing - portfolio tasks.
Unit 4 - Narrative writing - portfolio tasks.
Unit 5 - Persuasive writing - portfolio tasks.
Unit 6 - 600-word written piece and oracy presentation tasks (both 25% of the total marks for the course)
Unit 7 - Reading questions/comprehension - portfolio tasks.
Units 8 - Reading questions/comprehension - portfolio tasks.
Unit 9 - Proofreading - portfolio tasks.
Unit 10 - Editing/polishing/redrafting - portfolio tasks.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
