Overview

This course offers a thorough introduction to calculus, tailored for A Level and first-year undergraduate students. It covers essential topics such as limits, differentiation, and integration, along with their practical applications in science and engineering. Through real-world examples and interactive exercises, students will sharpen their problem solving abilities and develop a strong mathematical intuition. Designed to lay a solid groundwork for more advanced studies, this course also equips learners with valuable skills for various scientific and engineering fields.

Programme

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of calculus. It begins with the development of the limit concept, leading to two key results: (i) the derivative and (ii) the definite integral. Differentiation rules are derived from first principles, and the fundamental theorem of calculus is used to establish corresponding integration rules. These techniques are then applied to solve problems involving differentiation and integration, highlighting their practical applications.

  • Limits and Continuity
  • Differentiation
  • Integration

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Sketch the graphs of simple functions.
  2. Calculate the limits of real valued functions.
  3. Determine whether given functions are continuous or not.
  4. Explain the idea of derivative and compute derivatives from first principles.
  5. Compute the derivative of functions.
  6. Compute integrals by method of substitution and integration by parts.
  7. Compute integrals of trigonometric functions.
