Staff Opportunities

The Student Wellbeing Service (SWS) is working to bring a varied package of training to all staff, to support learning around students’ mental health (MH) and wellbeing. We offer short online modules that can be accessed any time, and practitioner led training sessions available for booking through LTEU pages, helpful for those anonymised case study discussions.

Information on all our training options is listed below. We can also work with you on advising and delivering any service area, departmental/faculty training need, so please contact us for a discussion on what could help.

Online E-learning for staff

The SWS are continually researching relevant, helpful online training options for staff. The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust has developed training for staff within various educational settings

The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust (CWMT) offers 6 stand-alone, 20 minute, E-Learning modules on student mental health and wellbeing in higher education.

The modules are described below and can be accessed through the CWMT webpages.

1 Key Principles

Students seek the support of student wellbeing services but often they will approach other staff informally. This session looks at the key principles you will need to consider when supporting students in those informal situations.

2 Signs to look out for

An introduction to signs of deteriorating mental health. Once completed you will be able to identify characteristics associated with good mental health, recognise behaviours likely to be within the ‘normal’ range of university students at certain times, recognise conditions which suggest a swift response is required, state where to find further information.

3 Key Skills

The ability to identify the qualities of a good listener, state the five main skills of active listening, classify four statements identifying barriers to listening, identify open, probing, leading and closed questions, and differentiate between empathy and sympathy.

4 Transitions

Find out about some of the difficulties that students face when they start university. You will be given suggestions about when it is important to direct students to other people who may be able to help.

5 Students at Risk or In Crisis

Responding to students who are experiencing crises, and/or are taking risks with their, or others’, wellbeing. How to help students in these situations, and be well supported within ourselves, and by colleagues.

6 Case Study

Recaps and brings together skills from other sessions to provide you with a key summary of how to help students, as well as showing good practice in action through a case study.

Practitioner Led Training

These sessions, whether face to face or through online webinars, offer staff an opportunity to learn more about student issues, how they may present and what can be done to best support the student and staff member. Delivered through PowerPoint and with plenty or opportunity to explore anonymised case studies, making the learning relevant to your everyday experiences.

Togetherall

Supporting Student Wellbeing Video Clips

The four short videos – each under a minute long – offer practical pointers on how personal tutors and other academics can make a positive difference to students’ mental wellbeing. They feature tips on keeping calm when talking to a student who is struggling, being prepared with simple and useful responses, and taking care of your own wellbeing whilst supporting students. They can be used either by individual members of staff, or as part of a training session.
