Overview

This is a module designed to use charcoal only. By exploring the medium’s potential for mark making, the module aims to aid students to discover its qualities and extend its conventional use. Through a variety of projects ranging from life drawing to imaginative responses, students will produce a body of work that indicates developing skills in fundamental drawing techniques.

Programme

Students will work on a variety of investigative projects to include a range of images for:-

Portfolio:

  • Drawing by candlelight
  • Thumb nail sketches
  • Underlying washes with ink

Tutorial:

  • Imitating metal surfaces
  • Tonal drawing
  • Chiaroscuro
  • Carving back using bread
  • Wax resist
  • Self portrait
  • Life drawing
  • Progressive movement and drawing
  • Frottage
  • Imaginative responses.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Show evidence of having explored different skills and techniques using charcoal.
  2. Build a portfolio including large and small-scale work alongside a visual diary showing contextual awareness of art and art history.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the work and techniques of artists who have used charcoal.

Assessments

  1. Visual Diary - 20%
  2. Portfolio - 80%
