Overview
This face-to-face course with further supportive information on Blackboard will embrace the stitching tradition of The Welsh Sampler from the middle of the 1800s, its origins and stitches. Reference will be made to the Last invasion tapestry from Fishguard made by a community of embroiderers. Students will work on class and self-directed projects during the course and create small and plan a larger piece that can be completed after the course has finished. Using basic stitches and bright threads, you will be able to create a personalised beautiful object.
Programme
Each session will begin with a discussion and contextual links to the topic of the day. Students will copy and example and synthesize their learning through a plan for a personal project.
Session One: General content overview: early Welsh Samplers Creating borders through combined stitches.
Session Two: Group discussion: What can we learn from the Last Invasion tapestry? Demonstrations Chain stitch with two colours, Rosette Stitch, introducing ribbon – threading and knotting Create a snowdrop in class.
Session Three: Transferring design to cloth. Demonstration Split Stitch, Twisted Straight Stitch and introducing seed beads.
Session Four: Using Rough Linen chord. Assessment of micro embroidery.
Session Five: Log and short stitching for shading Choose a leaf or flower for logbook Split stitch and blending colours Directional stitching to create different effects.
Session Six: Padded Satin Stitch to create a ladybird or beetle. Using metallic threads.
Session Seven: Present personal project, this does not need to be completed but a plan can be shown.
