Overview

This course is designed to introduce the learners to drawing, observational skills and colour. The sessions are designed to encourage learners to investigate and find the limitations of the medium, explore creative colour effects using a range of pastel media and techniques. Historical and contemporary references, particularly from Welsh artists, will form a journal of studies. We will use oil and soft pastels.

Programme

Session One: Introduction to chalk pastels, oil pastels, purchasing and materials.

Session Two: Exercise in compositional skills. Introduction to Blog discussion: preconceptions of drawing.

Session Three: Exploration of mark-making, use of tone, monochrome, local and reflected colour.

Session Four: Introduction to colour theory: primary, secondary and complementary.

Session Five: Topic to include colour ranges: equivalence and tone, contrast of line against blended areas.

Session Six: Use of limited palettes and blending techniques.

Session Seven: Exploration of use of tinted backgrounds self-directed study.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the basic elements of colour theory and apply knowledge using primary, secondary and complimentary colours.
  2. Explore mark-making techniques and the use of colour, tone, blending and composition, show work executed in a limited palette.
