Overview

This practical course will enable learners to understand and learn how a sewing machine operates - identifying its various parts, threading and bobbins, thread tension, safety around machines and how to fix common stitch errors. Learners will then learn the basics of sewing including sew in a straight line and turning corners, seams, pressing, as well as how to understand materials and patterns. Through the creation of actual garments, learners will learn and develop basic sewing skills which will enable them to progress their sewing independently or on further Lifelong Learning courses.

Programme

During the course, learners will cover the following:

Session 1: Machine Mastery & Setup The first hurdle is understanding the "beast" in front of you.

Session 2: Foundational Stitches & Seams Before making a garment, you practice the building blocks of construction: Straight Lines & Curves: Drills to help you sew straight, turn sharp corners, and navigate smooth curves.

Session 3: Fabric & Pattern Literacy Understanding the materials and instructions is crucial for independent projects: Fabric Anatomy: Identifying the grain line, bias, and selvedge.

Session 4: Practical Projects Conclude with 1–2 projects that incorporate everything learned: Intro Project: A tote bag or cushion cover to practice straight lines and hems. Intermediate Skills: Adding features like zippers, buttonholes, or elastic waistbands.

Sewing machines will be provided for the teaching of the course but not for homework. Learners will need the use of their own sewing machine at home as the tutor will set you tasks to do between sessions.
