Overview
This practical course provides an introduction to the identification of mosses and liverworts (bryophytes) while developing broader plant identification and recording skills. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to build confidence in field botany, the course focuses on understanding how to identify, observe, and record bryophytes rather than memorising a fixed species list.
Through a combination of classroom workshops, laboratory sessions, and field visits, learners will explore the biology, ecology, and diversity of mosses and liverworts. Participants will gain experience using identification keys, field guides, digital recording tools, and microscopes to examine both collected specimens and plants in their natural habitats. Over the duration of the course, learners will become familiar with a range of common bryophyte species and the habitats in which they occur.
The course is structured around monthly meetings, consisting of an in-person workshop held on Wednesday afternoons at the University campus, followed by a field session on the last Sunday of each month. Field visits will take place at a variety of locations within approximately 30 minutes of Aberystwyth, offering opportunities to encounter bryophytes in different environments. Transport by private car is not essential, as lift-sharing arrangements will be coordinated where possible.
By combining practical identification skills with an understanding of bryophyte ecology and biological recording, this course provides an excellent foundation for anyone interested in botany, conservation, natural history, or ecological surveying.
Programme
Practical Workshops (4 x 3.5 hours)
During the Practical Workshops held on the Aberystwyth University campus, learners will explore the following
- Workshop 1: Introduction to Bryophytes
An overview of the major bryophyte groups, including mosses and liverworts. Learners will explore their structure, ecology, reproduction, life cycles, and the key terminology used in bryophyte identification. - Workshop 2: Resources for Identification
Introduction to the tools and resources used in bryophyte identification, including field guides, identification keys, websites, and mobile applications. Learners will develop confidence in selecting and using appropriate resources. - Workshop 3: Microscopy and Laboratory Identification
Practical training in the use of microscopes and laboratory techniques for examining bryophyte specimens. Learners will investigate diagnostic features and develop skills in detailed identification. - Workshop 4: Recording and Biological Records
An exploration of the importance of biological recording for conservation, research, and monitoring. The session will cover both traditional and digital methods of recording observations and submitting records.
The monthly field sessions will provide opportunities to apply identification skills in a variety of local habitats and will include:
- Developing practical field and laboratory identification skills.
- Identifying common moss and liverwort species in their natural environments.
- Learning how to record observations accurately using notebooks, recording forms, and digital apps.
- Collecting and preserving specimens ethically for further study.
- Creating a personal reference collection or voucher herbarium to support future identification work.
Throughout the course, learners will build confidence in recognising bryophytes in the field, using identification resources effectively, and contributing valuable biological records.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Observe and record, using the correct terminology, the key features necessary for the identification of bryophytes in the laboratory and field.
- Identify a range of common bryophytes using keys and reference material and relate species to their preferred habitat(s).
- Produce an annotated portfolio of specimens.
Assessments
- Test (25%)
- Portfolio - 1800 Words (75%)
Reading Suggestions
Reading suggestions will be offered throughout the course.
Entry Requirements
This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.
