Student Profiles
Luke Johnston
(BA English Literature)
"During my time at Aberystwyth University, the English Department was superb; the lecturers maintained your interest in the subject through their own obvious passion, as evidenced by the fact that they were conducting research projects and at the top of their field. The admin team and the library staff were also extremely helpful, particularly when I was feeling stressed over essays. Furthermore, in my first year, I lived in the Penbryn residence and the catered food was to a good standard – the breakfast is still something I talk about with joy and sometimes miss.
Aberystwyth is a great location with access to beautiful nature and, of course, the beach. The nightlife was fantastic with a vast array of pubs and bars where you were guaranteed to meet someone you knew at some point on a night out and, partly due to student nights in various places around town, was relatively cheap for both food and drink. This meant that the whole town had a friendly atmosphere at all times and it constantly felt like you were at home.
In terms of my degree, without it I would not have been invited to interview for a teaching assistant position, which eventually led to the school paying for my teacher training. Therefore, I am teaching English as a Head of Department in Mongolia today because of the degree I chose and the faculty who helped me to fulfil my potential in the subject – it almost feels like fate!
For anyone thinking about going to Aberystwyth, I would highly recommend it as a safe, friendly and welcoming place where you will instantly feel at home – my decision to go there was based on the warmth I felt during the open day from the guides and staff and that feeling never left me. I can think of no better place to develop as a young person with aspirations and am genuinely thankful for what the town and university of Aberystwyth has given me."
