Wedi ei eni a'i fagu yn Aberystwyth, graddiodd Iwan mewn Gwyddoniaeth o Brifysgol Caergrawnt ym 1985 cyn mynd yn ei flaen I gwblhau MPhil (1986) a PhD (1989) mewn Hanes ac Athroniaeth Gwyddoniaeth yno. Bu'n Gymrawd Ymchwil yng Nghaergrawnt hyd 1994 a treuliodd flwyddyn ym Mhrifysgol Califfornia yn San Diego cyn derbyn swydd darlithydd ym Mhrifysgol Belffast. Ymunodd a'r Adran Hanes a Hanes Cymru yn Aberystwyth yn 2005. Bu'n olygydd y cylchgrawn History of Science hyd ddiwedd 2014 ac mae'n parhau yn aelod o'r bwrdd golygyddol. Mae'n gymrawd o'r Gymdeithas Hanesyddol Frenhinol ac o Gymdeithas Ddysgiedig Cymru.

Mae Iwan wedi cyhoeddi yn eang at hanes a diwylliant gwyddonaieth y cyfnod Fictoraidd. Mae newydd gwblhau cofiant y gwyddonydd o Gymru William Robert Grove a golygu yr Oxford Illustrated History of Science. Mae yn ymchwilo hanes arbennigwyr, rhithoedd gwyddonol, a syniadau Fictoraidd am y dyfodol. Mae'n gyd-ymchwilydd at y priosect Unsettling Scientific Stories: Expertise, Narrative and Future Histories wedi'w ariannu gan yr AHRC ac yn gyd weithiwr at y John Tyndall Correspondence Project ym Mhrifysgol Montana a Phrifysgol York Canada.
