Living and working in Aberystwyth
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is home to a community like no other. Our exceptional research culture and sense of intellectual community is reinforced by the high quality of life offered by the surrounding area.
Aberystwyth University occupies one of the most scenic sites of any in Britain. Located on Penglais Hill overlooking the town and Cardigan Bay, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the University is part of a lively, friendly, and safe community that combines the traditional features of a seaside resort with those of a university town. Aberystwyth is also naturally ‘green’ as close integration of town and university makes widespread use of cars unnecessary; everything is a relatively short walk or cycle-ride away.
Aberystwyth University boasts a range of facilities that cater to a diverse variety of sporting and fitness activities. Sports Centre, located on campus just steps from our Llandinam Building, offers the latest gym equipment and a variety of fitness classes. The sports enthusiast will also find 48 acres of natural grass pitches, badminton, basketball, and squash courts, and a flood-lit all weather sports pitch. The town also hosts Plascrug Leisure Centre which has a range of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, including a swimming pool, squash courts, a gym and an outdoor multi-sport pitch.
Recreation and Entertainment
Aberystwyth is blessed with beaches, castle ruins, and some of the most striking countryside in the UK. Its coastline, punctuated by blueflag beaches and breath-taking cliffs, attracts walkers, surfers, and families looking for a day out. The surrounding Cambrian Mountains and nearby Snowdonia National Park provide some of the finest hiking in the country, on our doorstep.
For a night out, Aberystwyth has a venue for all occasions. The award winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre is located on campus, and is a focal point of the community. The Arts Centre offers an artistic programme that includes drama, dance, music, and the visual arts, and boasts a 3D cinema, two theatres, cafes, bars, a gift shop and a bookshop.
There are more than 30 pubs in town, which provide venues for staff and students to carry on the conversation after seminars and various other events. Many offer excellent food, local ales, beers and spirits, and host live music by some of Aberystwyth's finest musical acts!
