AHRC South, West and Wales Partnership PhD funding for research students

Aberystwyth University is one of eight universities forming the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWWDTP) which is awarding 52 doctoral studentships for entry in September 2015. 

SWW DTP have been awarded £14.2 million by the UK Arts and Humanities Research council to deliver postgraduate supervision, training and skills development over five years from 2014. The Training Partnership provides research supervision and doctoral training across a wide range of critical and creative fields in the arts and humanities, including cultural and historical geography. This is extended by a network of prestigious international, national and regional organisations representing the arts, heritage, media and government sectors. The awards provide excellent opportunities to undertake research with collaborative supervision in partner institutions, including Bristol, Exeter, Bath, Bath Spa, Cardiff, Reading, and Southampton.  

The Department of Geography & Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University is inviting applications and expressions of interest from students whose research interests include:

  • Cultural Geography
  • Historical Geography
  • Geographies of Heritage and Memory
  • Geographies of Mobility
  • Landscape and cultural geography
  • Environmental History / Histories of Extreme Weather Events
  • Cultural and Historical Geographies of Wales, Scotland and Ireland
  • Geography and Performance
  • Geography and Creative Writing

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Gareth Hoskins Director of Postgraduate Admissions (tgh@aber.ac.uk) or Head of the Cultural and Historical Geography Research Group/Assistant Director of Postgraduate Studies, Peter Merriman (prm@aber.ac.uk) or other potential supervisors within the Department. They should include a CV and details of their research interests/project ideas. Candidates should hold or be undertaking a relevant Master’s degree, although equivalent professional experience may be considered appropriate. Funding is only available to Home or EU students. Students are eligible for full UK/EU fees at Research Council rates and a maintenance grant at the AHRC rate (£13,726 in 2013/14).
