Travelling to Aberystwyth from Overseas

Here is some information to help you organise your travel to Aberystwyth for your study school.

1. Immigration requirements

For advice on Short Term Student Visas, please contact the Aberystwyth University International Office by email on There is further information on their Visa Support & Advice website.

If you are offered a place, Postgraduate Admissions Office ( will advise you on how to obtain a visa if necessary.

You should consult your travel agent or the local British Consulate, Embassy or High Commission about visa requirements and any necessary vaccinations well in advance. A current passport or identity card, valid for the duration of your time in the United Kingdom and the study school, is essential. You need to show your passport and/or visa whilst at the study school.

If you plan to visit another country after the end of the study school, you should obtain any necessary visa before you leave your own country. It may not be possible to arrange a visa through an embassy in London in time to permit your visit to take place. You should also ensure that, if necessary, your British visa is valid for a return to Britain before you travel back home.

2. Insurance

You are strongly advised to take out insurance to cover cancellation costs, loss of personal baggage and money, and medical expenses. The British National Health Service normally does not provide free medical treatment (except in an emergency) for students on courses of less than 6 months' duration nor for citizens of countries with which there is no formal reciprocal agreement. The Aberystwyth University does not provide this insurance for you.

3. Climate and Clothing

The British climate is well known for its variability and some days can be cold and/or wet, even in summer. You should bear this in mind when selecting clothing for your visit to Britain. Remember also that you will generally be expected to carry your own baggage, so keep weight to a minimum.

4. Concessionary Air Fares

Some airlines offer concessionary rates for students; you may be able to show your letter of acceptance to your course as proof of your student status. The University cannot make arrangements for your travel to Britain nor help you with travel arrangements while you are in Britain.
