On completion of this module, students should be able to clearly demonstrate:
1. a thorough understanding of self-directed ideas and media investigations;
2. a conceptually-led, investigative approach to research that gives expression to personal concerns and ideas;
3. an experimental and conceptually investigative approach to contemporary fine art, and provide evidence of a thorough and rigorous line of enquiry and research;
4. competent understanding and use of visual and media research (through a note book containing all research in the form of written and visual material;
5. a good understanding of, and experimentation with, a range of media, taught and introduced on the module, with an acknowledgment and sensitivity toward process and content;
6. efficient use of the studios, Project Room, facilities and time, with regard to health and safety issues.
Students shall continue to prioritise and follow lines of enquiry that stem from and develop conceptual investigations to a higher degree of competence than in Semester 1. Their conceptual exploration will continue to lead, inform and dictate material-, process-, skill- and media- based investigations. The module will enable students to consolidate and develop their interests in a wide variety of contemporary and traditional subjects, including those already offered at the School, and those new to the school.
All the new areas of exploration will continue to be offered by workshops and seminars that will take place in the ISP studio as well as within the Creative Media Lab.
The module continues to encourage and allow students to move freely through and across disciplines and boundaries encouraging a sophisticated interdisciplinary approach. It offers students the opportunity to combine and consolidate their investigations in modules offered within the department: photography, printmaking, illustration, painting and drawing.
Students who take the module will continue to be encouraged to make use of the spaces designated to the module - 'The Project Room' and the ISP studio space.
The students taking the 20 credit module will be required to:
- write an initial 'statement of intent' that they will adapt, critique and review as their project evolves;
- submit a portfolio with evidence and documentation of 2 works/installations/projects in response to the 2 set projects;
- thoroughly research at least 6 contemporary artists relevant to their research.
- This module offers a self-directed model in order to build upon and develop students' ability to follow a conceptually lead investigation, taking their lead, inspiration and ideas from contemporary practice, while recognising and understanding the historical background to artist's practice.
- The aim of the module is to continue to develop and extend the students' range of methodologies for developing an interdisciplinary approach to their practice, encouraging students to adopt new approaches and attitudes to art practice within a non medium specific context, to continue to introduce them to interdisciplinary and contemporary artists' practice.
- The module encourages students to develop a studio-based practice, so that they can contribute and assist each other in learning and development.
- The module offers the students a designated studio space and a 'Project Room' - an empty, experimental bookable space. Students are encouraged to book this space for experimental project work throughout the semester.
- The students will continue to approach their practice with the possibility of employing a wide range of media: installation, mixed media, 3 dimensions, film, video, sound, site specificity, new genre public art, socially inclusive practice, text based practice, performance, animation etc in combination with contemporary drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and illustration.
- New media disciplines (video, sound, animation, digital art etc) are taught and supported by workshops and one-to-one surgeries in the Creative Media Lab within the School of Art.
- The students will cross the boundaries of specific mediums, to work with a combination of mediums that best suit their investigations.
- The module promotes and centres on community learning, collaboration and communication. Meetings will be student-centred and student-led, where possible focussing on students' work in progress and discussions of relevant contemporary practice.
- Students taking this module will be encouraged to continue their course of study beyond the 2nd year and into their 3rd year through ISP, 5 and 6 in order for them to establish a continuity and methodology of working across disciplines and media in the studio, Project Room and offsite throughout the 2nd final year.
- ISP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are designed to allow the students a continuous and flexible approach to interdisciplinary practice offering them time and space to follow individual and consistent lines of enquiries within very flexible and open-ended set projects.
