Aims

Learners will improve their competence in writing, speaking, reading and listening and will also become familiar with a wide range of aspects of German culture. In addition, they will be introduced to the specialist skills required for translating a range of keywords relating to German history into English.
Brief description
This module forms part of the research skills programme for PhD students in History and is suitable for students with some prior knowledge of German. It aims to introduce students to contemporary German, imparting basic competence in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and developing the student's language awareness as part of his/her generic language learning skills
Content
All classes will be devoted to the integrated study of the German language in its cultural context. One weekly hour and one fortnightly hour are devoted to the systematic teaching of grammar, and in the other hours (2 per week) students will be in small groups and will do a range of listening/writing/oral/aural exercises to consolidate the skills acquired in the larger classes. Exercises will be set regularly. Marks for these - and for occasional tests in class - will constitute the mark for the course
