On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Define tourism, leisure and recreation.
2. Explain the historical development and current economic significance of UK tourism and recreation.
3. Explain the roles and functions of the private, public and voluntary sectors in UK tourism and recreation.
4. Describe the critical issues that affect particular UK tourism and recreation sectors.
5. Describe the principal issues that will affect the future development of UK tourism and recreation.
This module provides students with an overview of the tourism and recreation industries in the United Kingdom. It addresses the historical development and current significance of UK tourism and recreation through an exploration of private, public and not-for-profit industry sectors. The module also investigates the issue that will influence the future development of tourism and recreation in the UK.
This is an introductory module that will enable students to describe the scale, scope and significance of the UK tourism and recreation industries, identify the structure and organisation of UK tourism and recreation, and examine the issues surrounding the development of tourism and recreation in the UK.

|Application of Number||Students will be expected to include numerical information in their coursework, including finding data, manipulating it and displaying it visually. This will be assessed through the coursework assessment criteria.|
|Improving own Learning and Performance||Students will be encouraged to develop realistic learning and self-management strategies through the use of project-based coursework. Students will need to manage their time input to completing the coursework on time and to a high standard.|
|Information Technology||The assignment will require students to make use of the Internet and data-retrieval systems (both bibliographical and statistical). Students' ability to track down and integrate suitable material will be assessed through the coursework assessment criteria.|
|Research skills||Coursework will be project-based, requiring students to determine their own subject (within stated guidelines), choose a suitable research question and decide how they are going to address it. Students' ability to do this will be included in assessment criteria and marked.|
