Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of and critically consider the difference between treatment and rehabilitation;
2. Demonstration an appreciation of and analyse the reasons for the limitations of treatment and rehabilitation;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of and critically consider the theoretical foundations of the subject;
4. Critically evaluate the different methods of treatment and rehabilitation (e.g. CBT) and different types of offender (violent, sexual etc.);
5. Demonstrate an awareness of and consider the reasons for the ethical limitations of treatment;
6. Critically analyse and evaluate the literature on treatment and rehabilitation of offenders and on types of offender.

2. The Treatment and Rehabilitation of Violent Offenders;
3. The Treatment and Rehabilitation of Sexual Offenders;
4. The Treatment and Rehabilitation of Young Offenders;
5. The Treatment and Rehabilitation of Offenders with Mental Health Issues;
6. The Treatment and Rehabilitation of Offenders with Substance Misuse Issues;
7. Practical Issues of and Barriers to Resettlement;
8. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT);
9. The Future of Treatment and Rehabilitation and National Offender Manager Service (NOMS).
Brief description
The module will provide a review of the current practices involved in the treatment and/or rehabilitation of offenders from a range of offence categories and institutions. Students will also engage with the theoretical and ethical principles that surround these practices. Overall students will gain an in-depth understanding of the complexities that surround the treatment and/or rehabilitation of offenders from a range of institutions and organisations.

Application of Number | Outcome measures of rehabilitative efforts are usually expressed in terms of percentages of success/failure and other numerical indices. Students will be introduced to basic skills in order to appreciate the significance of these values. |
Communication | Oral communication will be encouraged and developed during interactive seminar discussions on various key aspects of the module. Written skills will be developed through the examination. |
Improving own Learning and Performance | Seminar discussion and feedback on work will allow students to reflect on their own learning. Written communication assessed only. |
