Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the key gross and microscopic components of the sheep, cattle and pig reproductive systems.

Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the control of reproduction and its uses in livestock production.

Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the physiology of pregnancy, parturition and lactation in the female.

Brief description

This module will consider in detail the gross and microscopic functional anatomy of the reproductive systems of livestock, in particular sheep, cattle and pigs. Embryology and placentation will be covered along with the endocrine control mechanisms that govern all aspects of reproductive function in both the male and female. Lactation, its anatomy, physiology and function will also be detailed. Application to livestock management will be a theme throughout.
