Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Evaluate the scientific methods used in animal nutrition research
Discuss the ecology of the rumen and the methods used to modify it
Critically evaluate the methods used to modify the characteristics of meat and milk
Discuss the digestion and metabolism of nutrients in animals
Content
To outline the fundamental physiological and microbiological principles that underpin animal nutrition in the context of recent research. Although the module will focus on ruminants, descriptions of the relevant processes in monogastric animals will also be given where appropriate.
It will achieve this by considering the following areas:
Design of animal nutrition experiments
Nutrient digestion and metabolism
Modulating alimentary microbial populations and their ecology, and plant-microbe interactions.
Metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and lipids in order to modify the characteristics of meat and milk.

Brief description
This module will discuss recent developments in the nutrition of livestock animals. This module will draw upon some of the ongoing research in animal nutrition in IBERS and will present this in an accessible format to MSc students following the livestock and animal science routes.
