Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate a knowledge of The Odyssey and The Aeneid;
2. use examples from the set plays to demonstrate a knowledge of important themes and topics in Greek and Roman Drama;
3. write about a range of set books in an informed and well-argued manner;
4. demonstrate an ability to use and engage with a range of relevant information sources.
Brief description
This module provides a valuable supplement to the literature modules offered within the Department of English and Creative Writing and to anyone with an interest in classical drama. The course includes Greek Tragedy, with a particular emphasis on the role of gender within society and the predicament of the heroic figure, together with the comedies of Menander and of the Roman dramatist Plautus. The 'epic' element comprises the study of Homer, Virgil and Ovid.
