On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the history and traditions of production and reception that define the way sound and music can be (and has been) used in film.
2. Critically examine particular uses of sound and music in film, with respect to production processes, the textual contribution of sound and music and its contribution to reception.
This Module will be concerned with the historical development of film sound as a distinct aesthetic element in fil. It will look into production strategies, commercial, promotional and reception concerns and the place of musical accompaniment in audiovisual products. This will include, among others, lecture sessions focusing on the development of Classical Hollywood film music, the Classical Musical film, the employment of popular music in films, and sound and spatiality, and the construction of sonic landscapes.

This module will allow students of film to further consider one hugely important aspect of fil form that often gets overlooked - sound. Students will become familiar with the history of film sound, and will develop analytical skills that will enable them to analyse th emplyment of sound and music in films.
