On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Research and present reasoned arguments within a logical and engaging structure.
2. Manipulate and utilise mathematical equations to enable extraction of common biochemical parameters.
3. Explain the significance of biochemical concepts and parameters to non-biochemists.
4. Prepare a variety of media that communicates scientific principles to non-scientists.
The module will provide students with the opportunity to research and implement methods of problem solving in biochemistry. In addition to data-handling problems requiring appropriate processing of raw data to derive common biochemical parameters, students will be asked to find, interpret and re-present data as (i) an essay written for a non-scientist, and (ii) a poster aimed at a 6th form biology/chemistry classroom
In the first session, students are led through a discussion regarding the communication of science through the written word, particularly focusing on the structuring of arguments.
For subsequent session students are expected to have attempted to solve a variety of biochemical data analysis problems using mathematical arguments, which are then discussed in each session.
