Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Oral, written and visual communication.

2. Assimilation and synthesis of information from published research and databases.

3. Evaluation of research data in a wider context.

4. Conducting research searches using library, IT and database sources.

5. Self-assessment and team skills.

Content

Various formats of scientific reporting will be considered including theses, literature reviews, submissions for targeted publications and poster presentations. In addition, good practice in oral presentations will be described specifically the use of audio-visual aids and planning presentations. Effective team working skills will be developed through case study exercises. Opportunities for career advice and options will be provided in addition to familiarisation with Health and Safety issues.

This module will also address issues such as project management (work scheduling, setting objectives and deadlines, budgeting and record keeping) and include some focus on the roles and responsibilities of student and supervisors. It will also consider scientific ethics (e.g. plagiarism).
