On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Evaluate methods for managing classroom behaviour.

Understand the importance of assessment for learning in the classroom.

Understand the strengths and limitations of different approaches to learning and teaching.

Reflect on their own practices and experiences of learning and teaching.

Aims

This module requires students to critically evaluate a range of teaching and learning theories as well as techniques for the management of effective learning environments and practices. With particular focus on theories of learning, teaching styles behaviour management, , and assessment for learning, the module requires students to draw upon case studies, or their own professional practice, to reflect on and evaluate the success of various classroom practices.

Brief description

This module will allow students to evaluate a range of approaches to learning and teaching and to understand their application in different contexts. Furthermore it will outline techniques for classroom behaviour management and allow students to reflect on their own experiences and practices in this regard. Furthermore, it will allow students to examine a range of intervention strategies and to appraise classroom management techniques. Particular focus will also be placed on the importance of assessment for learning and how different classroom strategies can be implemented to ensure that AFL is benefitting all learners.

Week 2- Learning and teaching strategies 2
Week 3- Evaluating and reflecting on successful learning and teaching
Week 4- practical skills for managing learning
Week 5- Understanding the behaviour of learners, theoretical and practical approaches.
Week 6- Strategies for managing behaviour and classroom management techniques
Week 7- Addressing challenging behaviour- a multi-agency approach.
Week 8- What is assessment for learning?
Week 9- practical approaches to implementing AFL in the classroom
Week 10- designing effective learning

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Statistical reports will be considered and data to support arguments will be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments.
Improving own Learning and Performance Assessment for learning will be incorporated into many sessions to allow learners to reflect on their own performance and to develop strategies to improve.
Information Technology All assignments will be word processes and students will be required to utilize IT resources in the research of their assignments.
Personal Development and Career planning Reflection activities during seminars will be used to encourage personal development.
Problem solving Students will be tasked with identifying solutions to classroom behaviour issues.
Research skills This will be developed throughout the module but particularly in regards to the research necessary in the assessments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop skills in classroom behaviour management and teaching skills appropriate for different ages.
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work.
