Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an effective knowledge and understanding of how cultural diversity and race equality impact on education in contemporary Britain.
Critically evaluate ideological arguments about cultural diversity and race equality in society and education.
Demonstrate an ability to form coherent arguments based on sourced evidence in discussing issues of cultural diversity and race equality.
Appreciate the need to show respect for and understanding of others in a culturally diverse society whilst challenging inequality.
Demonstrate effective skills of written and oral communication in a range of different situations.
Brief description
This module aims to deepen students' understanding of cultural diversity and race equality in British society;
consider the implications of cultural diversity and race equality for the education of all children and young people in schools;
examine the theories and practices underpinning education policies in a culturally diverse society.

Content
Lectures are based on the following topics:
Lecture 1: Patterns of migration and Britain as a multicultural society
Lecture 2: Notions of identity in diverse societies
Lecture 3: Psychological, philosophical, and sociological perspectives on multiculturalism
Lecture 4: Public and governmental responses to multiethnic, multicultural Britain
Lecture 5: Ethnicity and achievement
Lecture 6: Educational responses to ethnic and cultural diversity
Lecture 7: Race equality and racism
Lecture 8: Bilingualism and learning additional languages
Lecture 9: Preparing all pupils for life in a multicultural society
Lecture 10: Developing a culturally diverse curriculum
Seminars are based on the following topics:
Seminar 1: Personal experiences of ethnic and cultural diversity
Seminar 2: Debates about the policy of multiculturalism
Seminar 3: Analysing bias in the media
Seminar 4: The relevance of education for diversity and equality in different kinds of school
Seminar 5: The attainments of pupils from specific minority ethnic groupings

Seminar 7: Monolingual or bilingual education and school language policies

| Communication | Oral communication is developed through discussion, debate and presentations in seminars. Written communication is developed through the assignment, the written examinations and some seminar tasks. |
| Improving own Learning and Performance | Feedback from the written assignment and personal reflection during seminar tasks encourage improved performance. |
| Information Technology | Written assignments should be word-processed and one of the seminar tasks requires the development of a PowerPoint presentation. |

| Problem solving | Several seminar tasks set challenges for students to negotiate. Education for diversity and equality contains many issues where contrasting viewpoints need to be considered and tensions resolved. |
| Research skills | Research is required for the main assessments and some of the seminar tasks. |
| Subject Specific Skills | Skills involved in negotiating, evaluating and resolving controversial issues and tensions e.g. dealing with racism; reconciling differences between aspects of culture; and developing sensitivity to other people's viewpoints and experiences. |
| Team work | Some seminar tasks require students to work cooperatively in groups to address issues of diversity and equality in education. |
