Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Brief description

The module will begin with an outline of the key study skills that students will be required to develop. These will include referencing, essay writing, using academic sources, time management, critical evaluation, and examination technique. The module will equally focus on key transferrable skills including group working, leadership, and communication, which will link to students' PDP and career planning.

Aims

To provide students with the necessary study skills to complete academic assignments and examinations at university.
To enable students to work effectively in groups.
To introduce students to key transferrable skills.
To allow students to develop skills in self-reflection and evaluation.

2. Evaluating your own performance and developing a personal development plan
3. Referencing, bibliography and plagiarism
4. Academic writing
5. Using the internet for information/ search skills
6. Effective Reading Skills
7. Critical Thinking 1
8. Preparing for and giving verbal presentations

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Students may analyze numerical data in researching their assignments.
Communication Students will have the opportunity to develop their written and oral communication skills. Oral presentation skills will be developed through in class discussions and an assessed presentation. Written skills will be developed through the assignments. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills to communicate to different audiences through the development of the flier.
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be required to undertake self-directed study in terms of the wider reading and assignment preparation. Attendance in sessions will enhance a range of learning skills. Students will reflect on improvements to own learning in portfolio and presentation assignments
Information Technology Students will develop competency in utilizing electronic sources of information through bibliographic and web based sources. Assignments 2 & 3 will be submitted in a word processed format; assignment 3 will utilize appropriate design software. Assignment 4 will utilize PowerPoint
Personal Development and Career planning Students will develop a range of transferable skills including time management, team work, communication and evaluative skills. These will be incorporated into lectures and seminars and be assessed as a core aspect of the module.
Problem solving Students will analyse a range of sources and texts as part of their portfolio work and group project. Problem solving activities will form part of the lectures.
Research skills Students will have the opportunity to undertake independent research for their assignments. There are sessions covering effective information gathering skills within the modules.
Subject Specific Skills Students will have the opportunity to communicate educational practices and contexts to a range of audiences/ learners. This will, in part, be assessed through the study skills flier to be developed. As part of the examination preparation sessions links will be made to the context of other modules.
Team work Students will have the opportunity to work in groups as part of the group work project assignment. Additionally, all seminar will include an element of group work
