Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the development of numeracy and literacy and the relevance and importance of recent policies and initiatives.

Evaluate strategies to support learners who experience difficulties in the development of numeracy and literacy skills.

Understand specific learning difficulties that impact on the development of numeracy and literacy.

Aims

Numeracy and Literacy are key elements in government policy on education. The development of the literacy and numeracy framework in Wales are clear indicators of this. On this module students will develop their understanding of the needs and requirements for the development of literacy and numeracy and will be given opportunities, skills to assess and understand children’s development against milestones and to recommend intervention strategies. Students will critically evaluate current research and practices and identify solutions to some of the barriers to supporting children with learning difficulties.

Brief description

This module focuses on the development of numeracy and literacy in learners with particular focus on key milestones in development. Topics on the module will support students to identify a range of learning difficulties that can prevent learners reaching key developmental milestones and provide an opportunity to reflect on current research, and best practice, to support learners with learning difficulties. Students will have an opportunity to assess the barriers to implementation of inclusion strategies and to assess the importance of a multi agency approach in supporting learners.

Week 1- Learning theories and policies in literacy development
Week 2- Learning theories and policies in numeracy development
Week 3- Milestones in numeracy and literacy development
Week 4- Learning difficulties affecting literacy, speech and language development
Week 5- Learning difficulties affecting the development of numeracy
Week 6- Intervention strategies to support in the development of numeracy and literacy
Week 7- Evaluating case studies and best professional practices
Week 8- Current research and initiatives to support learners in numeracy and literacy development
Week 9- Barriers to supporting learners
Week 10- A multi-agency approach to supporting leaners in the development of numeracy and literacy.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Statistical reports will be considered and data to support arguments will be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments. Furthermore, in the presentation students will be assessed on oral communication skills.
Improving own Learning and Performance Assessment for learning will be incorporated into many sessions to allow learners to reflect on their own performance and to develop strategies to improve.
Information Technology All assignments will be word processes and students will be required to utilize IT resources in the research of their assignments.
Personal Development and Career planning eflection activities during seminars will be used to encourage personal development.
Problem solving Students will be tasked with identifying how learners can be supported in the development of numeracy and literacy.
Research skills This will be developed throughout the module but particularly in regards to the research necessary in the assessments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop skills to assess and understand children's development against milestones and to recommend intervention strategies.
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work.
