Content
Session 1-2 Overview of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals - progress achieved and challenges with particular emphasis on: Goal 7 - Ensure environmental sustainability; Goal 8 - Develop a global partnership for development
Session 3 Report of the UN Secretary-General - A Life of Dignity for All: accelerating progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and advancing the United Nations development agenda beyond 2015.
Session 4-5 Overview of United Nations international partners on Millennium Development Goals. Setting assignment: Exemplification of international development projects.
Session 6 UK International aid and development policies
Session 7 Making sure children in developing countries get a good education: issues, actions and case studies
Session 8 Girls' education and gender equality. Improving the lives of girls and women in the world's poorest countries
Session 9-10 Helping developing countries deal with humanitarian emergencies; issues, actions and case studies
Semester Exam: Oral presentation of students' work
Brief description
Initially this module will review the Millennium Development goals and the targets linked to environmental sustainability and global partnership for development. It will proceed to consider challenges and goals post 2015. Attention will be given to why countries are involved in international aid and will ask the question: What is in it for them? To examine this further the international aid and development policies for the UK will be considered. Central to the success and sustainability of development projects is the core role that education plays in providing people with the knowledge, understanding and skills for life and work. It proceeds to highlight the need to improve the education of girls and women particularly in poor countries as women will have the greatest influence on children's health, education and opportunities. Finally, the module will draw on extensive case studies of international development projects and how assistance is given to countries to deal with humanitarian emergencies.

In their assignments, the students will be expected to demonstrate the capacity for critical thinking, to demonstrate a critical understanding of the Millennium Development Goals, and to consider the challenges facing developing countries. Students will also be expected to give an oral presentation. |
| Improving own Learning and Performance | Whilst this is not a formal component of the module, students will be offered ample opportunity to talk about their learning with both the tutor and their peers. Detailed feedback on written assignment and oral presentation will be provided as a matter of course. Students will also take an active role in the peer assessment of the oral presentations. |
| Information Technology | Students will be required to word-process their assignments and to plan and deliver an oral presentation. |
| Personal Development and Career planning | The module is designed to equip students with an understanding of the core principles and targets of the Millennium Development Goals as governed by the United Nations. It further sets out to provide students with an insight of international development projects and the organizations involved. |
| Problem solving | Students will have to consider and decide upon the most appropriate scenario of making a public case for donations towards supporting an international development need. They will need to draw upon appropriate information to make a persuasive case to justify why the financial assistance is required. |
| Research skills | Students will be expected to access and retrieve information from a variety of different sources (books, journals, on-line) in preparation for both seminar discussion and written work. Bibliographic skills and critical reading of the research literature play an integral part in this module. |
