On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the capacity for high-level professional judgement in gathering and interpreting professional and research information in various forms.
2. Undertake systematic analysis of research data and extract key findings.
3. Plan and undertake a work-based research inquiry pilot study;
4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the practical implications of undertaking practitioner-led enquiry.
5. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the importance of methodological stance in practitioner research, and the challenges posed by ethics in practice;
6. Evaluate implications of research findings for future development personally, professionally and researcher-inquirer, and interpret the implications of these for their academic / professional discipline in general;
7. Begin planning their Part 2 Doctoral study, equipped with the methodological knowledge required to undertake a successful thesis.
The modules aims are to:
1. To prepare students for Part 2 Doctoral study by means of conducting a professional research project.
2. To ensure that students are able to apply in practice key models of work-based research frameworks.
To challenge students to examine their professional context and own practice, using data from a wide range of sources, and to challenge them to reflect on their development as a professional practitioner, and a researcher / inquirer.
This module builds on the reflection and scoping carried out in PGM3020 and PGM3140, and is designed to offer MProf students the opportunity to undertake a more substantial and independent study in their area of ‘professional concern’. This work should form the basis of the final, fuller project in Part 2. It is also intended to offer students the opportunity to test work-based methodologies, researcher ‘stances’, and data collection methods prior to their engagement with Part 2 study and their final thesis or portfolio.

|Application of Number||Quantitative approaches to collecting and analyzing data will be addressed in the module, and students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of these in their assessed task.|
|Communication||Communication is core to effective completion of the module. Academic and professional spoken communication will be developed throughout face-to-face elements, but not assessed. Written communication will be developed throughout written assessments, online discussion board activities, and assessed through written assignments.|
|Improving own Learning and Performance||This is core to the module, and will be achieved through a systematic evaluation of the student’s professional experience|
|Information Technology||Much of the academic content of the module will be accessed using ICT, as will many of the seminar discussions, and supervision sessions. Written assignments will be word-processed. Management and protection of data will also be addressed during the module.|
|Personal Development and Career planning||This is core to the module and will be achieved through a systematic evaluation of the student’s professional experience.|
|Problem solving||Through applying critical literature to professional experience.|
|Research skills||Students will be expected to access and retrieve information from a variety of different sources (books, journals, online). Bibliographic skills, data analysis, critical reading of research literature and analytical methods all play an integral part in this module.|
|Team work||This skill-set will inevitably developed during seminars, but will not be assessed.|
