Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. ​Explain the current and future challenges facing the UK’s agri-food sector.

2. Synthesise information from industry and peer reviewed literature.

3. Compare the approaches taken to address specific challenges to the industry.

4. Evaluate the extent to which new approaches and practices might be applied to UK based systems.​

Brief description

This module will only be available to Nuffield Graduates. Candidates will be expected to submit their Nuffield report as part of the application process and acceptance will be conditional upon a successful review. Feedback will be provided as to the scale of work required by the student to meet academic standards.

An introductory workshop will provide an opportunity for students to meet their tutors, talk through their existing Nuffield Report and gain an understanding of the requirements of the module. Students will then work through a series of online Study Skills units providing them with the tools to re-examine their study tour premise and findings from an academic point of view.

In line with the Nuffield Scholarship programme, study topics will be focused on:

Independent research into good practice in either farming, food, horticulture or rural industries outside of the UK; and

Exploring the potential for applying these in a UK context.

Content

Through an introductory workshop and a series of online Study Skills units, Nuffield Graduates will gain the intellectual skills to reexamine and evaluate their study tour from an academic point of view. All scholars will be allocated a tutor within IBERS who can work with them in developing their ideas. Outputs from the module will include: a literature review for the chosen study area; a fully referenced report including identification of gaps and potential areas for further study. It may also involve a full rewrite of the report and/or re-analysis of data. Upon completion of the report, students will complete a dissemination activity which could include: a short film, a technical article for publication e.g. in a trade journal, a panel review; or presenting at a conference or workshop.

Applicants wishing to undertake this module must have graduated from the Nuffield Scholarship programme within the last five years.

Module Skills

Application of Number Reanalysis of data where necessary.
Communication Students will be expected to communicate complex research outputs to their peers in their dissemination activity and through their final report.
Improving own Learning and Performance Detailed feedback will be given for assignment work providing general guidance towards the student’s next assignment.
Information Technology Students will be required to source information from a variety of scientific publication data bases and to use Blackboard.
Personal Development and Career planning The Nuffield Scholarship is available to people working in the agri-food sector. In itself the scholarship provides an opportunity that can benefit careers, industry and business, as well as advancing personal development. Nuffield Scholarships are recognised worldwide and provide access to a network of forward thinking professionals.
Problem solving The reanalysis of the Nuffield reoprt will help develop and improve student’s problem-solving skills.
Research skills Students will be required to undergo directed self-study, so will develop their literature research skills.
Subject Specific Skills Students will explore in detail challenges to the UK’s agri-food sector, look at how these are being met elsewhere; and apply this learning to UK based systems.
