On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand and evaluate frameworks for safeguarding.

Evaluate the implementation of safeguarding in different educational contexts.

Evaluate and understand the importance of multi-agency approaches.

Understand the professional responsibilities of practitioners in educational settings.

Reflect on their own practices and/or experiences of professional practice in education.

Aims

This is a core module of the BA Education, FDA Education (Learner Support), FDA Education (SEN) and will also be offered as part of BA Childhood Studies. The module underpins the legislation relating to safeguarding and allows students to enhance their own professional practices in regards to safeguarding and supporting vulnerable learners.

Brief description

This module will prepare students with the knowledge and skills to prepare and implement effective safeguarding practices that align with legislation and policy. Students will evaluate frameworks and legislation for safeguarding and, through a series of case studies, will evaluate the implementation of safeguarding practices in various educational contexts. The module will outline some of the key safeguarding issues facing children and vulnerable adults both within education and wider society. The module will enhance the professional practices of learners and prepare them to work with potentially vulnerable groups.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Statistical reports will be considered and data to support arguments will be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments.
Improving own Learning and Performance Assessment for learning will be incorporated into many sessions to allow learners to reflect on their own performance and to develop strategies to improve.
Information Technology All assignments will be word processes and students will be required to utilize IT resources in the research of their assignments.
Personal Development and Career planning Reflection activities during seminars will be used to encourage personal development.
Problem solving Students will evaluate safeguarding policies and their implementation in various contexts.
Research skills This will be developed throughout the module but particularly in regards to the research necessary in the assessments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop skills in regards to safeguarding implementation and professional practice.
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work.
