Brief description

The module will encourage students to take ownership of their personal, professional and academic development and utilize this to enhance their practice. Students will be required to keep a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their ability to meet the national occupational standards for early years’ practitioners. Critical reflection in relation to current practice and professional roles will be an integral part of the portfolio. Evaluation of current research findings and exploration of the possibilities and implications for future development both personally and within the profession will be encouraged. Students will be assigned both a university supervisor and a placement mentor.

Content

The professional practice portfolio will consist of evidence from practice in an early years setting. During their placement, students will be supported online to cover the following topics:

Key concepts in work based learning (2 hour lecture)

National Occupational Standards and professional development (2 hour lecture)

Working with your mentor (2 hours)

Structuring the portfolio (2 hours)

In addition, each student will have a designated supervisor and a placement mentor who will monitor the student’s progress. The student will be expected to email a fortnightly update of progress to the supervisor. The supervisor will undertake two assessed visits of the placement.

Throughout year 1 and semester 1 of year 2, compulsory workshops will be held with students to provide details on organizing placements, professional conduct and assessment portfolios.
