Semester Assessment Continuous assessment: regular assignments (5 in all) in writing, reading, listening, speaking at appropriate level. One of these assignments will be linked specifically to the History scheme followed by the student worded as follows: Either a piece of translation (into English) of 500 words, or a precis in English of a longer piece of text (2500 to 3000 words) in German, again of 500 words. Each assignment is weighted equally.   100%
Supplementary Assessment Resubmission of any missing coursework. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. display proficiency in German grammar and syntax at the appropriate level
2. translate selected passages from and into German
3. identify different registers of written German
4. use a range of linguistic structures
5. communicate in written and oral German at a standard appropriate to level 1
6. produce summaries of material written in German in English or Welsh and German
7. use a relatively extensive German vocabulary
8. give their own insights into key aspects of German society
9. respond with clear understanding to standard German as spoken by native speakers in informal and formal situations
10. perform role plays in German
11. demonstrate an ability to recognize and translate into English (or Welsh) key words in German relating to German history

Aims

GEM1810 is designed for Master's or doctoral students with some prior knowledge of German (normally A-level or equivalent). Learners will improve their competence in writing, speaking, reading and listening and will also become familiar with a wide range of aspects of German culture. In addition, they will be introduced to the specialist skills required for translating a range of keywords relating to German history into English.

Communication Students will learn to communicate orally and in writing in fluent and accurate German
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be required to learn independently outside the classroom, above all in the Language Resource Centre, where they will be expected to make full use of resources such as CAL materials and satellite tv.
Information Technology Students will be shown how to use the Language Resource Centre and will be expected to make use of it in their own time as well as during timetabled classes
Personal Development and Career planning The development of effective communication skills is an important aspect of personal development
Problem solving Students need to learn to use reference works (e.g. grammars, dictionaries) efficiently and accurately; they also have to develop strategies for translating texts when some vocabulary items are unfamiliar and no reference works are available.

This module is at CQFW Level 7
