Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Plan, manage and complete a collaborative practical project to ensure the physical and intellectual control of an archival, cultural heritage or information collection.

2. Apply relevant theories and best practice to appraise and arrange a collection.

3. Analyse preservation and conservation requirements and undertake basic preservation activities for a collection’s ongoing care and access.

4. Design appropriate data models for a collection’s documentation using relevant metadata standards and software.

5. Undertake the documentation of a collection for its ongoing access and management using appropriate standards and software.

6. Disseminate information about the collection and the project using relevant methods and media.

7. Use reflective techniques to analyse and appraise personal professional development and learning.

Brief description

Students are given the opportunity to implement theoretical knowledge and skills gained throughout the course by planning and undertaking an extended practical project. Working alongside relevant professionals they will prepare, process and document an archival, cultural heritage or information collection so that it can be made available to the designated users. Students will disseminate information about the collection and their project’s progress appropriately and reflect on their learning experience.

Content

​This project based practical module applies theoretical constructs, relevant standards and best practice guidelines to process an archival, cultural heritage or information collection for access and future management and disseminate information about the collection and the project. Students will work in groups to:
Plan, manage and undertake a practical project working with fellow students and relevant professionals;
Apply relevant theories and best practice to appraise and arrange the material;
Identify and use software and standards to create relevant documentation and an interoperable catalogue for the collection;
Assess and report on relevant preservation and conservation requirements and undertake basic preservation activities;
Disseminate information about the collection using appropriate methods and media;
Reflect on professional development and learning.
