Semester Assessment Outline Data Management Plan  10%
Semester Assessment Full Data Management Plan  To complete a data management plan for their research project. This can be done online. The plan needs to be appropriate for the research project and is approved by the supervisor.  15%
Semester Assessment To successfully complete the online ethical assessment process for their research project. This means it needs to be signed off by the appropriate person in their institute (e.g. DoR).   35%
Semester Assessment Attendance / Participation in class exercises  Each part of the assessment must be completed in order to pass the module. In-class exercises at the workshop, which need to be completed / attended. The exercises will cover a) the identification of plagiarism cases, b) what ethical issues can emerge in research, and c) what to do with data. The exercises will be completed in a small group environment and peer-assessed  20%

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. to understand, assess and critically evaluate plagiarism in their own (and other's) writing
2. to understand, assess and critically evaluate the ethical issues of their own research project
3. to understand copyright, data protection, and data storage requirements with regard to their research

Brief description

It is essential for PhD/MPhil students at the start of their course to have a detailed understanding of ethical, plagiarism, copyright, etc. issues. This module will provide an appropriate overview/introduction.
The module will be in the format of a workshop and will focus on Research Ethics and Writing Issues. This will include ethics, issues of plagiarism, confidentiality, copyright, data protection, freedom of information in the research and writing process, and data storage requirements. The online ethical process at Aberystwyth University will be covered.

Aims

To provide PhD/MPhil students with understanding of ethical, plagiarism, copyright, etc. issues. For the students to be exposed to the online ethical system at Aberystwyth University.

Content

The module will be delivered during a daylong workshop covering the relevant aspects. The workshop includes in-class exercises, which need completing. This is followed by an online submission of the ethical approval for the students own research project, which needs to be approved by the relevant person in their institute (e.g. Director of Research). In addition, a data management plan needs to be completed (using online resources).
