Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Identify the components of livestock production systems.

2. Review and evaluate scientific literature and apply results to the development of livestock production systems.

3. Explain how science can be applied to the improvement of livestock reproduction, lactation, health and growth
& development.

4. Discuss ethical and social issues related to the application of livestock sciences.

Brief description

This module explores the way in which research is used to develop more efficient livestock production systems. Lectures and seminars will cover a range of topical subjects selected from reproductive technologies, manipulation of lactation and fertility, meat science, parasitology and precision livestock farming.

Content

Topical subjects in livestock production including:
  • Reproductive technologies including:
  • - Artificial insemination and embryo transfer
  • Dairy cattle production systems including:
  • - Manipulation of milk quality - Management of mastitis in the dairy cow - Management of cows in the transition period
  • Meat Science including:
  • - Growth and development - Impact of pre and post slaughter management on meat quality
  • Control strategies for livestock parasites including:
  • - Gasto-intestinal nematodes and Fluke
  • Precision livestock farming technologies including:
  • - Sensor systems - Data for the management of livestock

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Interpretation of scientific publications. Assessed in seminars and exam.
Communication Developed and assessed in seminar and written work.
Improving own Learning and Performance Through developing skills in the reading and interpretation of scientific publications, preparation of written work and seminar presentations, and working to deadlines.
Information Technology Assessed use of PowerPoint in seminar presentation.
Personal Development and Career planning
Problem solving Lectures and seminars will develop an awareness of the complex inter-relationships among components of animal production systems. This will enable students to identify and analyse problems, and an evaluation of the research literature and its applications will provide case studies that demonstrate how applied science can be used in problem solving. Assessed in seminars and exam.
Research skills Developed through a study of the scientific literature and assessed by assignment and examination.
