On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Compare the differing methods of disease control to provide a greater understanding of how parasitic diseases can be controlled.
2. Critically assess the importance of novel techniques in the development of control methods for parasitic diseases.
3. Develop a coherent research strategy to advance knowledge leading to better control methods for a specific veterinary or human parasitic disease.
This module is designed to give students an advanced understanding of the current theories, techniques and underpinning biological research related to parasitic disease control. This will be research-led teaching providing insight into the future of veterinary and human parasite detection, prevention and elimination. Covering a range of globally important parasites studied at Aberystwyth University, this module will offer students the chance to develop practical and analytical skills relevant to a future career in parasitology.
The module will contain a series of introductory lectures covering the theory and application of major parasitic control methods. Tutorials throughout the modules based on IBERS research areas will strengthen this understanding providing specific examples of current advances in the field. These will cover areas such as drug development, vaccine development, diagnostic tools, preventative strategies and epidemiological techniques. Practical classes will also allow students to gain specific relevant skills in parasite control research techniques. Coursework will develop the students’ ability to communicate parasitology research in a variety of manners appropriate for paper writing, grant writing and conference presentations.
