Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of children’s development and learning
2. Understand the impact of adults and the environment on children’s development and learning
3. Reflect upon and evaluate children’s development and learning in practice.
Brief description
This module introduces students to the methods of child study, child-care practices and developmental psychology and relates these to a practical context of working with young children. Students will consider the main principles of children’s development and think about specific additional learning needs. They will consider the impact of the environment on children’s development and learning, as well as reflecting on the importance of monitoring, reviewing and evaluating children’s development and their own practices. As part of the module, students will undertake 50 hours of placement in an early years setting.

Weeks 9 and 10 – students will undertake placements (50 hours in total). Throughout the seminar sessions, students will be supported in finding and organising placements.
