Brief description

Having established the essential practical and theoretical underpinnings of effective learning and teaching in the core module Effective Teaching for Effective Learning 1, this module establishes the principles of reflective practice and how change can be instigated and maintained within a teaching and learning context. You will be given opportunity to consider how to develop your own practice effectively on the basis of reflection, consideration of relevant research findings and of collaboration and partnership development. The critical interpretation of partnership and collaborative methods will enable you to consider and plan effectively for your own professional development and establish a strong mindset and ethos for reflection and development throughout your career as a teacher and lecturer.

Content

Each unit will comprise of two hours combination of lectures and seminars.
Unit 1 – Evaluation, reflection and critical thinking, incorporating reflective models and critical incidents
Unit 2 – Initiating change and creating effective teaching and learning systems
Unit 3 – Learner participation in enhancing learning
Unit 4 – Enquiry based methodologies
Unit 5 – Research Informed Practice
Unit 6 – Collaborative learning – Colleagues and partners roles in enhancing the Quality of Teaching and Learning
Unit 7 – Teacher Leadership
Unit 8 – Curriculum development and Planning
Unit 9 – Key government priorities for FE - National and College strategy
Unit 10 - Professional development – how to continue developing and enhancing practice

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Statistical reports may be considered and data to support arguments may be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments.
Improving own Learning and Performance This will be a core skill developed within the module, with strategies and methods being introduced, which the students will be expected to utilize in their own practice.
Information Technology All assignments will be word processes and students will be required to utilize IT resources in the research of their assignments.
Personal Development and Career planning This will be an integral skill developed within this module and will be a core part of the assessments.
Problem solving Students will consider how to address specific issues within their own contexts and practice, and develop the skills to address this in the future.
Research skills This will be developed throughout the module but particularly in regards to the research necessary in the assessments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop skills in regards to teaching, evaluating, and developing professional practice through research and collaboration.
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work. The consideration of collaboration and partnerships will be introduced and considered.
