Brief description
This 20 credit module brings students together in teams resolving common work based problems that will be found within the business environment. This includes team work, negotiation, problem solving and decision making as well as bringing together aspects of putting theory learned in previous modules into practice. This will help students to develop the soft skills required for second year and in the work place upon graduation.
Aims
To give students practical experience to reassure them that they have chosen the correct subject area. To give confidence in the work place and to pull together the theories, frameworks and tools taught in other modules through practical real world scenarios. This will also position them well for second and third years as well as any work placements including the YES scheme.
Content
There will be 2 scenarios over the course of the semester with the students split into 2 teams - management teams and staff teams, the assessments are staff presentation to managers and management critical reflection reports.
Practical sessions simulate common work based problems that student teams must work together to resolve using negotiation and team work. Each scenario builds up over 4 weeks and culminates in a presentation to the management team. After the assessment of the first scenario (presentation) the teams swop and the second scenario begins. Each student gets practice in being a manager as well as a staff member and assessed through presentation skills and team work as well as report writing.
