Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Critically discuss sustainability and the need to protect natural resources.

2. Compare different approaches to environmental regulation and show understanding of key issues relating to EIA.

3. Describe the basis of the UK legal system and the legal framework governing regulation of the UK environment.

4. Understand how the above knowledge is used by environmental professionals to deliver services and solutions for both the public and private sectors and related stakeholders.

Brief description

The module uses workshops to introduce students to environmental protection and sustainability; processes and legislative tools and principles. Examples of legislation and principles governing the regulation of the environment in the UK are considered. This includes some of the underlying policy issues and practices related to environmental protection including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The module prepares students for working as an environmental professional/consultant providing an introduction to skills and tools (practical and legislative) used by this sector.

Content

This module provides students with a tool bag of skills expected in any professional working in the environmental sector. The module introduces the need to protect the environment and aspire towards a sustainable low carbon economy. It highlights the role of key stakeholders and highlights how information is shared an communicated.
Selected examples of law and the principles governing the regulation of the environment in the UK are introduced to illustrate the complexity involved in reaching objectives. The module examines some of the underlying policy issues related to environmental protection. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as a regulatory tool is explored and how it is used to predict, assess and mitigate impacts. Also how it fits within the overall environmental management framework.
The principles of sustainability and effective project management are embedded throughout this module (in content and delivery). Students will be provided with an insight into working as an environmental professional including responsibilities, contract work and consultancy. In preparation for a future career in this area, workshops will also consider individual branding for targeting employment in the environmental sector.
