Private Sector Accommodation

Living in private accommodation is a great way to fully immerse yourself in the town of Aberystwyth.  It will offer greater privacy, and the ability to choose who you live with, and where you live. Most private accommodation will be within the town or surrounding areas and will have good transport links onto the campus. Sharing a house with friends is usually a go-to option for second year students.

Tips for viewing properties

  • Take someone with you to view properties, it’s helpful to have a second opinion
  • If you are living with housemates, make sure everyone views the property
  • Ask the letting agent/landlord as many questions as you need to
  • If you can, speak to the current tenants about their experience of living there
  • Take a look at the condition of the property and furniture, as well as the locks on windows and doors
  • If anything needs repairing, ensure the landlord or agent puts in writing that they will fix it before you move in
  • Take your time when looking around
  • Set a budget and stick to it - make sure you consider all bills and living costs
  • Consider whether you will need parking

Student Pad

  • Private landlords advertise their properties on Studentpad
  • You can search for flats and houses directly on the platform
  • You will deal directly with the landlord and the Accommodation team will not be involved
  • To advertise on Studentpad, properties must meet certain quality and safety checks set by Ceredigion County Council
  • Aberystwyth University do not visit or inspect Studentpad properties
  • If you are an agent/landlord looking to advertise student accommodation on Studentpad please visit the Agent/Landlord page.

Letting Agents

If you prefer to manage the entire process yourself, there are a number of letting agencies in and around Aberystwyth

  • The University is not involved with private letting agencies, so cannot guarantee the quality or level of service
  • There may be additional charges to consider, such as admin fees or credit checks
  • Properties are advertised year round

Students' Union

The Students’ Union (SU) advice service provides information, advice and support on all aspects of housing in University accommodation and the private sector. Take a look at the AberSU Housing Guide available on the SU housing and accommodation webpage, which is designed to help you when looking for a house in the private rented sector, pointing out the things to look out for and your rights as a tenant.

The SU can advise you regarding finding a new place, reviewing contracts prior to signing as well as common issues that occur during a tenancy and moving out.

Each year the SU host a Housing Fair event around November, which provides you with the opportunity to chat to local letting agents, the University Accommodation Office, Student Support and Union’s Advice Centre to help you choose the right place to live - all under one roof!

Check out our Facebook page dedicated to all things 'Accommodation'! Use this to share any vacancies you might know of, discuss issues you've had and share your experiences of searching for private accommodation. It's also a great way to meet people who might also be looking for someone to share a house/flat with. We also post regular updates on the page so it's a great way to keep in touch with us.
