Using E-Journals @ Aber

Using Titles Search

Use 'Titles' search when you know the title of the journal you require.
NOTE: E-journals @ Aber 'Titles' search cannot be used to search for articles. You need to know the title of the journal itself. If you know the title of a particular article, and the journal that it is in, or have the DOI, you can use E-journals @ Aber 'Citation Linker' search. If you are trying to find articles on a particular topic or subject, you will need to go to ElecInfo A to Z and use one of the databases on that page to do a subject search e.g. Web of Science/ Knowledge, etc.

The default 'Titles' search is 'Starts with', so start typing the beginning of the journal title and a list of close matches will appear below. Click on the one you require. If it does not appear in the list immediately, continue typing the title until it appears. If it doesn't appear at all, try clicking on the 'Contains' button and then typing one or two words from the title into the box; preferably choose the less common words. This will bring up a list of titles that contain all or part of these words. If you get too many results then try adding another word or part of a word.

Your results will be displayed below (in Detail view). Click on the title of the journal and a new box will appear headed 'Full text linking @ Aber'.

This page tells you which service provider give you electronic access to the full text of that journal and for which years. Under each of these links is important information - 'Authentication' - on how to access, especially if you are off-campus.

Click on one of the service provider links (after checking that it covers the year that you want to access), and look for the year/volume/issue/article that you require once you are on the service provider's website.

Note also that once you are on a service provider's website, you can then use their search facilities to look for articles on a particular subject/topic. But note that we do not necessarily have full text access to all the journals on that site.

Using Category (Subject) Search

Use 'Category' search to find journals (not articles) on a (broad) subject.

Click on the category in the left-hand list that looks nearest to your subject, and subcategories will then appear in the right-hand box (with the number of journals covered by that subcategory).

Click on the desired subcategory and then 'Search'.

N.B. An alternative view, with active search linking, of the listing of categories and sub-categories is available here

Using Citation Linker

About: Use Citation Linker to find full text when you already know the citation for an article. Citation Linker will link to the electronic full text of the article if Aberystwyth University can provide access; link to Aber’s print holdings or provide access to other relevant information services.

To use Citation Linker:

  1. Select either the Article, Journal or Book search options from the menu tabs;
  2. Complete the Citation Linker form with as much information as possible;
  3. You must identify the publication using one of the following:
    • Periodical title or abbreviation, or truncated title ending in %, e.g. National Civic Review or National Civic%
    • or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), e.g. 0027-9013
    • or Digital Object Identifier (DOI), a unique and persistent link to the electronic form of a whole book or journal; or an individual issue, chapter or article; etc.
  4. Include the year of publication even if you don't know the date;
  5. Then click on the 'Search' button;
  6. This will generate a menu offering the most appropriate resource and service matches.

To get the best results from Citation Linker:

  • Enter journal titles as precisely and comprehensively as possible;
  • Complete as many citation details as possible for the best matches;
  • If the journal title, year, volume, issue and page information is available for a particular citation, it may not be necessary to enter article title or author information.
