produce a piece of work whose presentation conforms to standard conventions used in published works.

Brief description

The first part of this module prepares Single Honours History students to undertake the planning and research for the undergraduate dissertation. Students will define a topic in consultation with a supervisor and will submit a plan of the proposed dissertation. Lectures and workshops will be provided in Semester 1 on the problems of defining a dissertation topic and on planning the research and writing. Instruction will also be provided as appropriate on bibliographic searching, the use of databases etc

Students will then research and write a dissertation of 12,000 words on any approved topic under the supervision of a designated member of staff. For students following Modern History and Politics, or any other degree scheme where a dissertation is either required or optional, approval of topic and supervisor will be arranged by the dissertation module co-ordinator.
