Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate dramaturgical skills in the determining of a creative outcome, and to conduct successful project design and application in the field of solo devised performance.

2. Engage in a range of production research activities to achieve a defined and conceptualised creative outcome

3. Conduct informed independent research and creative functioning leading to solo exposition

4. Evaluate critically procedures of dramaturgy and staging in the creation of a personal performance aesthetic

5. Review and evaluate critically their own performance practices and accept responsibility for determining and achieving personal, creative outcomes

Brief description

This advanced production module offers students an opportunity to conceive, develop, rehearse and present their own solo performance event of 30 minutes' duration. The development of the work will be guided through a series of practical workshops and individual tutorials with members of staff. In conceiving, developing and performing their solo students will also be given an opportunity to critically reflect upon and contextualise their chosen aesthetics within the broader field of contemporary performance practice. It is intended that the solo performance should serve as an 'exit work' that may assist transition into professional practice and/or further academic practice-based performance research.

Aims

The aims of this module are to:

  • Present students with the opportunity for independent and autonomous creative practice and the advanced opportunity to realize and apply techniques for devising solo performance work
  • Enable students to conceive, design, context and create a solo performance
  • Present students with the opportunity for advanced critical reflection on the process and presentation of self devised performance
  • Present students with the opportunity to contextualize their own work within contemporary performance practice in the public domain and practice based research in the academic domain

Content

This module will be delivered primarily through student-led, studio-based practical work, which will lead to a fully realised solo performance, which can be studio-based or site-based. The development of the work will be guided through a series of practical workshops and individual tutorials with members of staff.

The process that students will undergo as part of the development of a solo performance piece will typically include the following:

  • the exploration of a series of choices regarding the development of an initial concept or set of practices that serve as the starting point for the work.
  • research into and the application of different dramaturgical models
  • appropriate scoring or scripting
  • the planning and implementation of rehearsals and appropriate training
  • the planning and implementation of scenographic and technological elements
  • the management of budget, time and technical resources
  • the identification and evaluation of audience- performer relationships and the generation of an audience for the live event
  • culmination in a public live event
Throughout, students will be encouraged to apply reflexive and critical self-evaluation of the process leading up to and the realisation of the performance event in the context of a wider understanding of contemporary theatre and performance.

Personal Development and Career planning Transferable skills (managing personal workloads and meeting deadlines, designing and realizing assessment project) are developed through the completion of assessment tasks 1 and 2. Assessment task 1 provides students with an awareness of and skills in the devising of performance work, which are regarded as being valuable preparation for their move into professional practice.
Problem solving Analytical problem solving, outcome recognition and the identification of appropriate strategies and procedures are encouraged and assessed through both assessments.
Research skills Personal research and information literacy skills are developed through the conduct of research leading to Assessment 1
